The Netherlands pavilion ready for opening at Expo 2020 Dubai
With the handover of a symbolic key, the new Netherlands pavilion in Expo 2020 Dubai has officially been delivered today. This means that the Dutch entry will be ready in time for the opening on October 1st.
The key was handed over virtually in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, during a meeting between governments, companies and knowledge institutions connected to the Dutch theme ‘Uniting Water, Energy, Food’ at the Expo.
Uniting Water, Energy and Food
In the Gulf States, there are many opportunities for Dutch companies and knowledge institutions. The countries there want to change from oil and gas to more sustainable sources of energy to fight climate change. These countries also want to produce more of their own food.
”With our knowledge and expertise, the Netherlands can offer solutions that unite water, energy and food”, says H.E. Carel Richter, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Dubai and Commissioner General of The Netherlands Pavilion, Expo 2020 Dubai.
‘’Expo 2020 Dubai is a truly unique platform, where we present Dutch innovations in the fields of water, renewable energy and food security to the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the world. In the upcoming six months the Netherlands organize a diverse program where Dutch companies and knowledge institutions can explore markets in the Gulf region, find new partners and do business. With our knowledge and expertise, the Netherlands can offer solutions that unite water, energy and food. Always with a keen eye to corporate social responsibility.’’
In the upcoming months, our pavilion will be a real eye-catcher for the millions of visitors that the organization expects. A biotope has been built in the pavilion, which shows how you can grow food in a circular way. In a country with a dry desert climate, the Netherlands creates a a closed circular climate system in which we produce our own water, energy and food, which cannot be created without interconnection. For example, the water necessary for the plants is extracted from the air.
The Netherlands is also pioneering when it comes to the interior and exterior of the pavilion. Locally obtained and recycled building material has been used for the construction — to keep transport to a minimum. The interior also consists of recycled elements. All materials are returned to the region afterwards, or they will be given a new destination. With this approach, we keep the ecological footprint of the pavilion itself minimal.
Connecting companies and institutions
Not only does our pavilion showcase Dutch innovations, knowledge and experience. It also acts as a venue where business communities, knowledge institutions, governments and social organizations come together to network, exchange ideas & knowledge, and show what they have to offer to visitors.
The pavilion was designed and built by a consortium of V8 Architects, Kossmanndejong, Witteveen+Bos and Expomobilia. They have involved a large number of Dutch innovative companies in the construction. In addition to the design and construction, the consortium will also work on the maintenance and completion of the pavilion.
