Trilateral Water - Food - Energy Summit
On Tuesday, January 18th, begins the start of a two-day groundbreaking Trilateral Summit between the UAE, Jordan, and The Netherlands on Water Food and Energy at Expo 2020 Dubai. The summit, a first of its kind, led by leaders of the UAE, Jordan and The Netherlands, is designed to advance innovations to tackle some of the biggest challenges in water food and energy.
The summit builds on the work of an already established UAE, Jordan and Netherlands trilateral working group in a bid to showcase what can be done through technology, better knowledge, and cooperation. It focuses on a Water, Food and Energy Nexus approach. This evidence-based Nexus approach brings relevant data relating to the three domains together.
The challenges of providing sufficient and affordable resources in a socially inclusive way are interconnected. For instance, in the GCC, agriculture requires large amounts of water which, in turn, requires supply through desalination plants that are energy-intensive – the average person’s daily consumption of desalinated water is equivalent to driving a car for 8.5 km. Water therefore cannot be produced without increasing amounts of energy. Getting the balance right between how much water to produce for the right amount of food, supported by the right amount of energy, is key to making best use of resources. The three countries attending the summit will set out their commitment to a new era of policy making and resource management by supporting a Nexus approach that offers a sustainable way of addressing the effects of water food and energy.
