We’re the Dutch. We live in the Netherlands which, with its 17 million inhabitants, is one of Europe’s most densely populated countries. Our neighbours are Germany, Belgium and the North Sea.
Our country ranks among the top places in the world to live and work. We have the most competitive economy in Europe according to the latest World Economic Forum (WEF) index. Globally we rank fourth, behind Singapore, the United States and Hong Kong. So there’s more to the Netherlands than flat landscapes, canals, tulip fields, windmills and many, many bikes. Did you know that one third of the Netherlands lies below sea level? Located in this area are our most important cities: the capital Amsterdam, the government seat The Hague and Europe’s largest seaport Rotterdam.
Water, energy and food security are global issues. The Netherlands is working hard to tackle them. With such a large part of the country below sea level, we have had to protect our land from the powers of nature for centuries. And when it comes to energy, we are reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as we transition towards a sustainable, reliable and affordable energy system. We are taking the lead in the development of alternative energy sources and technologies. Over the past decades, we have built wind farms in the sea and heated homes and offices with recycled energy from datacentres and greenhouses. As a small but densely populated country we have a lot of mouths to feed. Did you know that in terms of value we are the world’s second largest exporter of agri-food products, behind the United States? Using our long-standing experience in intensive agriculture and farming, we are able to grow high-quality produce. We are keen to share our expertise in connecting water, energy and food with the world.
